MUFG is the result of the merger of Bank Of Tokyo, Mitsubishi and UJF. It is the No.1 bank in Japan and one of the largest financial groups in the world. With an increased focus on the EMEA business, the need arose to combine the hitherto separate websites of 17 countries in the region. Internally, this was also seen as an opportunity to create an exemplary new corporate website that could become a model for the group.


This project didn’t just bring together different countries, but also different business divisions that for the first time would present themselves together. So we prepared the communications team with briefings and training to solicit all the necessary information from across the group. We then ran workshops with different stakeholders to create the content platform and user experience for the site.


The website is based on a flexible yet coherent system that allows MUFG to autonomously add new pages of different designs whilst keeping the dynamism of the layout.

The website Content Management System had two specific challenges: First, it needed to enable the team to add a variety of new pages without needing to consult a designer, and secondly, the whole technology platform had to conform to strict security requirements from the Tokyo HQ. To make that possible, we built a bespoke tool that controls the publishing of the site. The admin interface has been designed to be very easy to use and understand.


In parallel, we developed a photography style based on the brand idea of ‘focus’. We brought it to life through two pictorial principles: using vanishing point lines running towards the key part of the image, and using a shallow depth of field.


The website launched on time and to budget and has successfully helped MUFG establish its presence in Europe, Middle East and Africa. It has brought to life the new MUFG brand story whilst setting new standards in the use of technology. We continue to manage the site and oversee its growth through SEO and Search Engine Marketing campaigns.
